I have left the Trim Water in my fridge the last few days since receiving the package so that they would be properly cooled, and because I have been insanely busy.
Today I will be tasting each one, and trying to relay my thoughts and feelings on each of the six flavours I received.
One of the things I have found out from David Sackler is that there are two flavours I am missing here today: Peach Mango and BlackCherry Blackberry. I thought about waiting on my taste test since the Peach Mango really interests me, but I wanted to get started and give you guys as much information about these products as I can. I will hopefully get to try the last two flavours at some point and time, giving you details on the full product line of Trim Water.
I will take a sip of the drink, leave it in my mouth, swallow it, and then immediately try another sip. Between flavours I will cleanse my pallette with water, and other than not spitting, this will hopefully be a little like a text version of Gary Vaynerchuk’s amazing Wine Library TV video show.
I am going to start with the flavour I am not really excited about and work my way from there, as I know from my own experiences with other beverages, which ones I am more likely to personally enjoy.
Raspberry-Vanilla
Smell: It smells a bit like raspberry candies.
Taste: The raspberry comes off stronger than the vanilla, that’s for sure, but it tastes a little fake, again much more like the raspberry flavouring in candies, or other beverages, rather than a real raspberry itself.
The aftertaste is very much on the raspberry side and it lingers for a while. I am not getting much of the vanilla at all. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not. Not really a fan of this flavour, but I am not a fan of raspberry products in general. If you like raspberries, and are worried about the vanilla aspect of this product, don’t be. I really didn’t get much of a vanilla vibe from this.
Blueberry-Pear
Smell: I am not getting a strong blueberry or pear smell from this one. Its a very weak fruit smell, but one that I can’t really label.
Taste: I don’t know what blueberry and pear are supposed to taste like when mixed together, but this isn’t what I was expecting. The flavour, unlike the smell, is very strong, so much so that it made me cringe. I am less of a fan of this one than the Raspberry-Vanilla, but this is definitely a stronger flavour. If you like bitter blueberries covered in honey, then you might like this.
Passionfruit-Berry
Smell: This one has had the strongest smell so far. A very pleasant sweet berry aroma.
Taste: Very syrupy, and chemically, though the least offensive to me so far. I am not sure what kind of berry they were trying to highlight with this flavour, nor have I tried passionfruit before, but I like this one more than the others. The flavour is a bit stronger than I would like, and maybe the sweetness is a bit too high, but I think I could actually drink this one, and grow to like it more.
Pink Grapefruit-Honey
Smell: I wish my whole house smelled of this. It is sweet, but not over the top like the Passionfruit one. It is the best of grapefruit, with almost a lemon fresh feeling to it.
Taste: A little bitter-sweet in flavour. Not picking up on the honey flavour at all, but the pink grapefruit is mild enough that the drink is palatable. I really like this one. I was worried I wouldn’t because I am not usually a fan of grapefruit, but so far, this is the best one I’ve tried.
Lemon-Citrus
Smell: Definitely picking up on the almost lemonade type smell of this one. It’s unmistakeable though not coming off as strong as some of the others.
Taste: Much milder than most of the flavours, but it could go a bit lighter as it is a bit too sweet for what I thought it was going to be. There is a little bit of a bitter kick to it, but less than the pink grapefruit one. The milder taste will probably appeal to a larger audience than the pink grapefruit one, but I think the pink grapefruit one is better than this.
Pomegranate-Cranberry
Smell: Very nice smell. Stronger on the cranberry side. A little sweeter than I expected. Almost like a cherry juice freezie.
Taste: The pomegranate and cranberry are distinct flavours I am very used to, and while this drink doesn’t really highlight them all that well, I have to admit that it is pleasant to drink. Much like I expected, this would be the flavour I can see myself carrying around and drinking more often than any of the others. It almost has more of a cherry flavour, much like its smell.
If I were to change it, I would probably drop the sugar taste down, and kick up the bitterness of the cranberry more. I think out of any of the flavours, this one has the most potential to agree with a large variety of people, especially with the health benefits of cranberry and pomegranate being promoted so heavily.
The strangest thing on this one for me though is the almost cherry halls aftertaste that lingers around afterwards. It isn’t a bad flavour but not the cranberry experience I was hoping for.
Ranking
I was close in my assumptions about which ones I would enjoy the most, except that the Pink Grapefruit-Honey flavour surprised me.
Here is my rundown:
Worst to Best
#5 Blueberry-Pear
#4 Passionfruit-Berry
#3 Raspberry-Vanilla
#2 Pink Grapefruit-Honey
#1 Pomegranate-Cranberry
Conclusion
Would I recommend this for most people? Well, I am not sure. They remind me of Powerade and Gatorade, two products that are marketed as sports drinks. If you like those, then you will definitely like these.
The difference in health benefits and formula is pretty large though.
At only ten calories per 240ml serving, and that is less than one sixth the calories you are taking in with Powerade. Also, Thin Water runs about the same reduction in sugars and carbohydrates.
One other major difference is the inclusion of caffeine in their product, which is used in many dietary products, but brings its own issues with it. One serving of the Thin Water includes 20mg of caffeine or around the same as one serving of my favourite pop, Barq’s Root Beer.
I don’t see myself using these products on a day to day basis. I could see myself drinking them once and a while as another product to replace water and get something flavoured in my hand, but I find them, just like the sports drinks, to be too syrup like in texture, too sweet, and a little too chemical in flavouring. I will definitely be drinking the pomegranate-cranberry quickly as I really enjoyed it.
They have a great product, and again, I think those that like the Powerade and Gatorade products, but are looking for something with less sugar, and a tiny pick me up in the caffeine department are going to love Trim Water.
